What affects the value of scrap copper cable?
A cable’s outside diameter does not tell you how much copper it contains. Here is what makes a quote more useful.
Start with recoverable copper
Insulated cable contains metal and covering. More recoverable copper relative to total weight can mean a different value per kilogram from thick-insulation cable with a small conductor. Avoid guessing a copper percentage from appearance alone.
Construction changes the assessment
Building wire, data cable, automotive wiring and armoured industrial cable can contain different materials. Aluminium conductors, shielding, steel armour, plugs and other attachments should be disclosed.
Separate the obvious categories
Where practical, keep clean bare copper, insulated cable and plumbing scrap apart. A clearly separated load is easier to assess than a mixture of different materials and general waste.
Ask for a load-specific quote
Send one overview photo, one close-up of cut ends, the approximate quantity and your suburb. An initial quote is subject to grading and weighing; confirm the final terms before the sale proceeds.
Compare like with like
When comparing two offers, confirm they refer to the same cable mix, payable weight and delivery arrangement. A rate for delivered, sorted material is not directly comparable with a collected mixed load. Ask about collection charges, non-payable attachments and the GST basis where relevant before calculating the amount you expect to receive.
A rate is only one part of the result
The useful calculation is the agreed net payable weight multiplied by the agreed rate, adjusted for any separately agreed charges. If the material changes between the photo and handover, the initial assessment may need to change too. Ask for an explanation rather than assuming the photographed top layer sets the grade for the whole load.
Avoid unsupported copper percentages
A label such as “high grade” does not establish a measured recovery percentage. Construction, insulation and attachments vary. Show representative conductor ends and mention known aluminium cable. If your load contains several types, explain the mixture. You can ask how the assessment was reached without pretending to know the copper yield yourself.
Bring a useful enquiry, not a perfect description
Your suburb, estimated quantity, clear photos and access information are enough to begin the discussion. Include a project reference for business material. Final grading and weighing, ownership and identity checks, collection arrangements and bank transfer details are confirmed separately before purchase.
